Does this mean that i would feel crappy from taking tramadol / codeine etc? And what are alternative medications?
I’m afraid I don’t know about tramadol, but I seem to be allergic to codeine and yes, oxycodone makes me feel awful. As far as alternative medications, I’m not sure. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help.
If you have ever a bad reaction to any of the narcotic analgesics, it might be best to avoid them all, regardless of any genetic association you may or may not have. You should definitely discuss it with your doctor. Also ask about non-traditional pain control options such as acupuncture, cognitive behaviour therapy etc. And if your doctor is not open to alternatives to traditional medicine pain control options, then you might want to consider getting a different doctor
Thanks Johan, but it is me that wants the meds! My doctor would be open to giving me what I ask for… but I don’t know what to ask for!! What are the alternatives to codeine and tramadol?
Thanks RjoyD. I don’t believe I have an allergy… I took codeine once and got through it but just made me feel really rubbish for about 24 hours! I could never work the next day or anything… I’m a bit dubious about trying it again :/

Codeine is my mortal enemy. I can’t figure out why anyone would touch the stuff.
I guess when someone is suffering so much, what options are there? What is it that would you use instead Janet?
All that works on me is ibuprofin. Not very helpful for major surgery. I have general anesthetic problems too, so they give me a block like you would have for child birth. If it is really bad, they knock me out all together. Novacaine does not work either.
I just tried Aleve for the first time. It helped a lot, but it kept me from sleeping for a couple of days. I already have insommnia, but hey, it worked better than Ibuprofin. I took it for a week, but it hurt worse on the day after I went off it. The next day, I was pain free-ish.
